Useful Management Information

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 7 days)
  • Mallet injuries (fracture <40% joint surface)
  • Simple finger proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) / distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) injuries including simple dislocations that do not require reduction
  • 5th metacarpal (MC) neck fractures
  • Tuft/fingertip injuries without large subungual haematomas
  • Buckle fractures to the distal radius/ulna (no breach in cortex)
Category 2 (appointment within 90 days)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome where patient is preferring non-surgical management
Category 3 (appointment within 365 days)
  • De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
  • Trigger finger
  • Osteoarthritis of the digits/thumb

If your patient does not meet the minimum referral criteria

  • Assessment and management information may be found on a range of conditions at HealthPathways
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

Essential Referral Information

  • Relevant pathology and radiology results (printed for the patient and sent with the referral), including private imaging provider

Additional Referral Information

  • The patient's first appointment may not always be with a specialist
  • Instruct the patient to take all relevant radiology films and reports (including the imaging report) to appointments
