Useful Management Information

  • The Obstetric Medicine Service runs a half day clinic on weekday mornings from the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH)

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)

Any medical comorbidities requiring subspecialty input or co-ordination during pregnancy including but not limited to:

  • Type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Graves’ disease
  • Chronic hypertension
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Antiphospholipid syndrome or Systemic lupus erythematosis
  • Significant pre-existing respiratory or cardiac disease
  • Previous venous thromboembolism on lifelong anticoagulation
  • Previous severe or pre-term pre-eclampsia
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Known to Obstetric Medicine service from previous pregnancy or seen for preconception counselling
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • Pre-conception counselling for pre-existing medical conditions as above
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • No category 3 criteria

If your patient does not meet the minimum referral criteria

  • Assessment and management information may be found on a range of conditions at HealthPathways
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

Essential Referral Information

  • Current pregnancy information (gravidity, parity and estimated date of birth) or identify if pre-conception review is required
  • Past obstetric history (if known) and previous pregnancy complications
  • Relevant medical, surgical, and psychosocial history
  • Current medications
  • Blood pressure and relevant clinical findings
  • Routine antenatal bloods and other relevant pathology or imaging

Additional Referral Information

  • BMI
  • Social history, where relevant
  • Indigenous status, ethnicity and language spoken (identify if interpreter is required)
