Are you referring to the right service?
Gold Coast Health provides a variety of care options, depending on the overall health and risk factors of the pregnant woman:
- General practitioner (GP) shared care – suitable for women who have a low‑risk pregnancy. Women continue to see their GP for pregnancy appointments
- Midwifery-led care – suitable for women who have a low‑risk pregnancy. Women receive midwifery care.
- Midwifery group practice (MGP) – a continuity model of care.
- For women with an uncomplicated pregnancy, planning an active birth and early discharge.
- An allocated midwife provides care through antenatal/postnatal periods and is on-call for labour/birth. The midwife works collaboratively with obstetricians and GPs.
- Care is provided in the hospital and community. The MGP midwives work in teams of 4 or 5 midwives and have teams dedicated to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, and women with mental health issues and/or drug and alcohol use.
- Eligible privately practising midwives – this is a choice available to women in the community and is a private arrangement with the midwife and the woman.
- Obstetrician-led care – if the woman experiences complications during her pregnancy, or is considered at risk of developing complications, an obstetrician will be the lead carer for the pregnancy and birth, including liaising with doctors and midwives during antenatal appointments.

Out of Catchment
Gold Coast Health is responsible for providing public health services to the people who reside within its boundaries. Special consideration is made for patients requiring tertiary services or for services that are not provided by their local hospital and health service district. If your patient lives outside the Gold Coast Health catchment area and you wish to refer them to one of our services, please indicate relevant medical or social information that will assist with the processing of your referral.
Notes
Please note that where appropriate and where available, the referral may be streamed to an associated public allied health and/or nursing service. Access to some specific services may include initial assessment and management by associated allied health and/or nursing, which may either facilitate or negate the need to see the public medical specialist.
- A change in patient circumstance (such as condition deteriorating or becoming pregnant) may affect the urgency categorisation and should be communicated as soon as possible.
- Please indicate in the referral if the patient is unable to access mandatory tests or investigations as they incur a cost or are unavailable locally.
- If your patient consents to telehealth, please indicate in the body of the referral.
