Useful Management Information
The assessment of static volumes refers to the measurement of various lung capacities and volumes including total lung capacity (TLC).
Indications:
- Establish or confirm a restrictive ventilatory defect.
- Diagnose hyperinflation and/or air trapping that can occur in obstructive lung diseases.
- Assess response to therapeutic interventions.
- Aid in the interpretation of other lung function tests.
Clinical advice:
- Claustrophobia or other factors that limit access to the body box.
- Temporary interruption of supplemental oxygen and intravenous fluids is required. This may be contraindicated in some patients.

- Reason for referral - what is the clinical question to be answered by performing the test?
- Current respiratory medications
- Infectious status
If a specific test result is unable to be obtained due to access, financial, religious, cultural or consent reasons a Clinical Override may be requested. This reason must be clearly articulated in the body of the referral.
