  • The Spinal Cord Injury Liaison Service (SCILS) provides advice, consultation, education, and liaison for people with Spinal Cord Injury.
  • SCILS works closely with the Statewide Queensland Spinal Cord Injury Service (QSCIS). See the QSCIS website for further information, management guides and other resources.
  • Specialised intervention and treatment following Spinal Cord Injury, including:
    • Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury
    • Atraumatic Spinal Cord Injury
    • Spinal cord metastasis
    • Spina Bifida
    • Transverse Myelitis
    • Spinal Cord Stroke
    • Cauda Equina
    • Spinal Cord Abscess

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)
  • Frequent hospitalisations to a base hospital with spinal cord injury related issues
  • Multiple attendances at emergency departments the same month
  • Recurrent autonomic dysreflexia (not active episode - refer to emergency department)
  • Consultation prior to elective procedure or admission.
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Change in urinary continence
  • Bowel management issues
  • Ongoing skin area concerns
  • Gradual change in motor function/abilities (e.g. transfers/ hand function)
  • Transitions between services or accommodation.
    • Weight gain or loss.
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • General review
  • Equipment related issues
  • Aging with Spinal Cord Injury

If your patient does not meet the minimum referral criteria

  • Assessment and management information may be found on a range of conditions at HealthPathways
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

  • Date of spinal cord injury
  • Co-morbidities and status of conditions
  • Bladder management (spontaneous, IDC, SPC, ICSC, other)
  • Bowel management (relevant aperients)
  • Current level of function
