Useful Management Information
The DLCO test evaluates the movement of gas from the distal air spaces into the pulmonary capillaries. It can be decreased (or increased) in various lung and systemic diseases that affect alveolar-capillary gas transport.
Indications:
- Evaluation of breathlessness.
- Quantifying impairment of diseases which involve the lung parenchyma.
- Evaluation of pulmonary vascular diseases.
- Evaluation of pulmonary involvement in systemic disease.
- Assessing the effects of chemotherapy agents or other drugs known to induce pulmonary dysfunction.
Clinical advice:
- The patient should refrain from smoking and other CO exposures on the day of the test.
- If clinically acceptable, the patient should not breathe supplemental oxygen for at least 10 minutes prior to the test.
