Percutaneous Arterial Blood Gas sampling and analysisAdult
Useful Management Information
The analysis of arterial blood for hydrogen ion concentration (pH), partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), is performed to assess and revise therapeutic interventions to maintain acid-base and/or respiratory homeostasis.
Indications:
- Evaluation of the adequacy of ventilation, acid-base disturbances, oxygenation status, intrapulmonary shunt, and the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
- Quantification of response to therapeutic interventions and/or diagnostic evaluation.
- Monitoring disease severity and progression.
This is predominately an outpatient service. Inpatient referrals are accepted on a case-by-case basis (e.g. when there have been previous difficulties obtaining a sample).
