Useful Management Information

  • Patients with BMI >40 may be deemed unsuitable for surgery due to increased complication rate
  • Joint replacement surgery will not be considered in active smokers
  • Adequate chronic disease /lifestyle (SNAP ) management is a requirement for joint replacement surgery (e.g. diabetes and anaemia

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)
  • Suspected malignancy
  • New pain in previously well-functioning arthroplasty
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • No category 2 criteria
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • Persistent pain or dysfunction despite attempts at medical management not meeting criteria for category 1
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

Essential Referral Information

  • Pain history
  • Functional impact including employment
  • Examination findings including range of motion, swelling/effusion, stability, and alignment
  • Smoking status
  • HbA1C (diabetic patients only)
  • Previous joint surgery
  • Height, weight and BMI
  • Plain X-ray
  • MRI not required but negates other imaging if obtained

  • Previous surgery
  • Investigations for inflammatory arthropathy
