Useful Management Information
- Sexual abuse occurs when an adult or a more powerful child or adolescent (including a sibling) uses power to involve a child in sexual activity.
- Children/young people who have disclosed sexual abuse/assault should be referred to Queensland Police Service - Child Protection Investigation Unit (Coomera: 5514 7812 or Surfers Paradise: 55707861) prior to referral for sexual abuse/assault examination.
- If the alleged sexual abuse/assault occurred in the previous 72 hours, Queensland Police Service - Child Protection Investigation Unit (During hours contact: Coomera: 5514 7812 or Surfers Paradise: 55707861) must be contacted prior to referring for a forensic sexual abuse/assault assessment.
- To discuss an urgent referral or arrange an urgent assessment (including forensic sexual examinations) please call 07 5687 1375 between Monday to Friday 8am – 4.30pm. Outside of hours please call GCUH switchboard on 1300 744 284 and ask to speak to the Paediatric registrar/consultant on call.
- If you have a reason to suspect a child is experiencing or at risk of experiencing sexual abuse without a parent able and willing to protect, it is mandatory to report your concerns to the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs .
- Contact numbers to complete a verbal report to Child Safety Services: 1300 678 801 in Monday – Friday business hours. After hours: 3235 9901.
- For forensic medical services for children over 14 years of age, please refer to Sexual Assault Service.
