Useful Management Information

  • Please clearly outline on the referral reason for a fibroscan

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)
  • No category 1 criteria
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • Hepatic steatosis / NAFLD without concerning features
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • No category 3 criteria
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service.

Essential Referral Information

  • Recent Liver enzymes
  • Previous fibroscan information and date if available
  • Body mass index (BMI)
  • Details of any associated medical conditions which may affect the accuracy of the fibroscan (Obesity/NAFLD/physical limitations)
  • Any special care requirements where relevant (able to lie flat and transfer on and off examination bed)
  • Must not be pregnant
  • Must not have ascites

Additional Referral Information

  • Family history of liver disease
  • Alcohol and illicit drug history
  • Medication history including non-prescription medications, herbs, supplements
  • Record of previous liver function tests
  • Iron studies/INR
